Meanwhile, people continued to make claims on their rights to use resources within SNP, and attempts at serious management of SNP encountered major problems. Almost all data collected subsequently on bonobo distribution and abundance across its range indicate that SNP may not have been the most appropriate site to protect bonobos.

This conflict between resident communities and wildlife presents a difficult problem, especially in countries like Ethiopia where different ethnic groups with different needs live together. Even if conservation authorities have the will to move resident people or deny them access to the park for its natural resources, they should be able to provide the communities with alternative livelihoods. However, this requires skilled manpower and financial capability, limiting ingredients in these developing countries, especially in the face of rapidly growing populations and expectations of the people.
