Andrew’s mother, Mary McDonough Johnson, supported him and his older brother, William, by working as a seamstress. The situation barely improved when she remarried; her new husband, Turner Daughtry, was no better off financially. With the family desperate, schooling was out of the question. Immediate and practical considerations won out; the boys needed to learn a trade and earn money. When Andrew was nine years old, his mother apprenticed him to James Selby, a local tailor, for whom William was already working.

Troubles continued as he suffered financial losses in the Panic of 1873 and contracted cholera that same year. Extant writings by Johnson indicate that he sincerely believed he was going to die. S. Years had not mellowed the man or his temperament, and in a special March 1875 session he attacked President Grant for his support of the “unconstitutional” Reconstruction government in Louisiana. However, Johnson’s return to the national arena was short-lived.

Johnson swiftly vetoed each measure, but Congress easily overrode his opposition. With one executive weapon nullified, Johnson sought other means of thwarting the Republican revolution. He encouraged opposition to the laws among Southerners, nurtured opposition in the North, and removed military commanders for interfering with civilian jurisdiction. But isolated incidents of cooperation did not indicate reconciliation, and Johnson continued in his attempt to reassert executive privilege.
