The biological distinctiveness of an ecoregion is assessed within its MHT, thus ensuring that we compare tropical moist broadleaf forests only to other tropical moist broadleaf forests and not to montane grasslands with major differences in patterns of biodiversity. We classify ecoregions as Globally Outstanding, Regionally Outstanding, Bioregionally Outstanding, or Locally Important. Three MHTs (tropical dry broadleaf forests; grasslands, savannas, and shrublands; and deserts and xeric shrublands) had a higher proportion of Bioregionally Outstanding and Locally Important ecoregions than did the other MHTs.
