This is no different to most other professional organisations. The Professional Conference Sub-Committee organises the annual conference, while the Continuing Professional Development Committee (CPD) plays a signi®cant role in developing CPD guidelines for psychotherapists. In the spring 2000 issue of The Psychotherapist, this committee outlined in an article the discussion with conference delegates on continuing professional development. ' were addressed and conference delegates' views were taken into account in order that the UKCP produces a cohesive CPD policy to which individual psychotherapists can adhere (UKCP, 2000).
Once this has been done, the individual is eligible to apply for enrolment as a candidate for the Society's Diploma in Counselling Psychology. This is in effect a Professional Qualifying Examination in Counselling Psychology. The diploma is not a course. What it offers is a set of criteria concerning training and practice which must be satis®ed if an individual is to receive chartered status as a counselling psychologist. As such it can be described as a yardstick against which an individual can measure her or his progress towards satisfying the diploma requirements.
At the same time, psychology has been criticised for being over-scienti®c and that in trying to ape medicine it has lost sight of the therapeutic relationship at the heart of helping. The development of counselling psychology can be seen as deriving from a desire to integrate these two positions.
