Dr. Ben O. de Lumen is a native of the Philippines and obtained his undergraduate degree (BS in Sugar Technology – Sugar Chemistry) from the University of the Philippines at Los Banos in 1962. He did graduate studies in the US, finishing his MS (Food Science) at the University of Missouri at Columbia, MO in 1968 and his PhD in Agricultural Chemistry – Biochemistry at the University of California at Davis, CA in 1972. He worked as a senior research chemist at the Campbell Institute for Food Research, Camden, NJ for 5 years before joining the faculty at the Dept of Nutritional Science and Toxicology, University of California at Berkeley,CA in 1978, where he is a professor. Prof de Lumen is a recipient of many honors including Awardee in Science & Technology, Philippine Development Forum (2010), Outstanding Professional in Biological Sciences, University of the Philippines Alumni Association (2005), Sir Fredric McMaster Fellow, Australia (2004), Twenty Outstanding Filipino-Americans in US & Canada (2004), NSF-CGP Fellow, University of Tokyo (1996), University Fellow in Agricultural Chemistry, UC Davis (1970) and EJ Wickson Memorial Fellow in Agricultural Chemistry, UC Davis (1969). He was elected Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011. He is a member of several professional and honor organizations including AAAS, American Society for Cell Biology, American Association for Cancer Research, American Chemical Society, Institute of Food Technologists, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi. He has currently 106 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 36 patents on lunasin approved in several countries. He co-founded Filgen Inc in 2000, now replaced by Narra Biosciences, LLC that has exclusive license to commercialize lunasin technology by UC Berkeley and is currently Board Chairman.  He is also an avid cyclist and tennis player.
